15/43 Frilford Grange Cottage

GV II

House. Early C18: probably C17 rear wing. Coursed limestone rubble; gabled stone
slate roof; symmetrical stone end stacks with brick quoins and tops. L-plan with
rear left wing. 2 storeys; 3-window range. Consoles to flat hood over C19
six-panelled (4 glazed) door. Flat stone arches over 8-pane sashes with thick
glazing bars. Raised storey band; moulded wood cornice. Rear wing of similar
materials: one storey and attic; 2- extended to 3-window range, with brick ridge
stack and two 2-light leaded casements to left. Interior: 2-panelled doors.
Central narrow hall has early C18 dog-leg with winder staircase, with turned
balusters on closed string. Room to right has chamfered beam, and eared
architrave to fireplace adjoining china closet. First floor has chamfered beam
and fireplace to right, and panelled surround to window seat and cupboard to
left. 5-bay collar-truss roof with butt purlins. Rear wing has large
back-kitchen with chamfered and stopped beam and large inglenook fireplace with
seats and saltboxes. Joints on the front elevation show that the window
arrangement has been altered, possibly from 5 bays originally to the present
3-window range.
