GV II

Corn Exchange, now theatre and cinema. Dated 1856 in inscription to pediment. Ashlar Bath stone; Welsh slate roof. Italianate style. Single storey and attic; 3-bay range. Stone plinth with moulded top. Vermiculated panels to base of pilasters to left of right of centre, and to base of rusticated piers to left and right. Blind balustrading between vermiculated panels. 6-panel double door with canted surround and carved tympanum over. Round-topped architrave-surrounded arch, the keystone of which has mask to face. Paired round-topped sashes to left and right of centre. Corinthian pilasters to each side of door. Corinthian capitals to rusticated piers at left and right. Bulls-eye windows with carved keystones to frieze of order. Plain pedimented gable with rose window having central clock. Right return: red brick. Irregular fenestration. Interior: noted as having roof trusses of cast-iron cast by Wilders of Wallingford.
