GV II

Almshouses. 1867, by J.P. Spencer for Town Commissioners. Flemish bond brick with limestone ashlar bands; old tile roof with decorative ridge tiles; brick stacks. Row of "one-up, one-down" cottages with rear outshut. 2 storeys; 8-window range, ascends Mill Street with every 2 bays stepped up. Shallow pointed arches over plank doors. Pointed tympanum arches of alternating brick and ashlar voussoirs pierced with roundels, over 2-light casements with cusped heads; ashlar storey bands beneath similar first-floor casements. Gabled roof with raised ashlar coping; ridge stacks. Interior not inspected. Terraced brick wall to front with piers and ashlar steps. (Buildings of England: Berkshire, p.255).
