7/75 Claywell Farmhouse
- II
Farmhouse. Datestone JW 1812 in left gable. Coursed limestone rubble; front of
dressed stone with ashlar dressings. Gabled stone-coped stone slate roof;
moulded stone ashlar symmetrical end stacks. L-plan, with rear right wing. 2
storeys; symmetrical 3-window range. Round arch over 6-panelled door with
fanlight; porch. Stone lintels over early C19 eight-pane sashes. Similar
service range to rear of 2 storeys; 2-window range has 2 early C19 plank doors
with strap hinges to right, two 3-light casements, and 2-light leaded casements.
Interior: front range has straight-flight stairs with stick balusters, and early
C19 first-floor fireplaces with cast-iron grates. Rear range has large kitchen
fireplace with beaded wood surround and spit racks above; also plank doors,
service stairs, sunk dairy to rear, and cheese room in attic. Butt-purlin roofs.
A complete example of a good early C19 farmhouse.
