TG 42 SW HICKLING SEA PALLING ROAD

6/11 Hickling Priory (formerly 16.4.55 listed as Priory Farmhouse and outbuildings) II

Priory of Augustinian Canons, now ruinous and in part incorporated into farm buildings. Founded 1185 by Theobald de Valoins, dissolved 1536. Coursed whole flints and some brick. Remains centre round undercroft of west range of cloisters : six bays with blocked arches to east, interior with springers for vaulting. To north a single celled space, probably parlour. To north- west of this range 3 bays of a further vaulted room now a derelict farm building. This range returns south with ashlar string course on west side terminating at diagonal brick buttresses. To east are more substantial remains of the east walk of cloisters, one length of wall having 3 blocked doorways with brick voussoirs, possibly entrance to chapter house. Evidence of C13 jambs.
