7/2 Remains of Baconsthorpe Hall c.80m south of Baconsthorpe Castle
GV II
Outer gatehouse to Baconsthorpe Castle, C16. Converted to house late C16/ early C17, altered early C19. Uncoursed galletted whole and knapped flint with stone dressings, roofless. Formerly 3 bays with external gable and turrets, now only centre and right bay with right turret. 2 storeys. Footings of ranges to right and left. Tie irons dated 1921. Central gateway arch reduced; early C19 doorway to centre bay within stone section to ground floor which breaks forward, 4-centred stone arch with spandrels under embattled parapet. Openings in stone probably reset from Baconsthorpe Castle in early C19: 4-centred headed lights under square heads, stone mullions and transoms, 3 lights over doorway, 3 lights to ground and 1st floor of right bay (mullions and transoms lost to ground floor). Turret to right gable: square to ground floor, octagonal to lst floor and above ending in stone cupola with finial, parapet of half lunettes; 3 small openings to east face. Rear: wide 4-centred moulded stone gateway arch, having slender side shafts, under brick relieving arch, wall above lost. Blocked 3-light window to first floor left. Interior: partition wall between 1st bay and central passage with remains of 4-centred stone doorway to rear. Coursed flint with brick, brick dressing to rear arches of openings. Floor lost. Fireplace to rear wall of right bay. Gable end: large opening across width of turret having segmental arch sloping down to rear, 1st floor fireplace partially blocked, blocked openings to turret; opening to turret at attic floor level.
