Details

HOLVERSTON TG 30 SW 6/22 Holverston Hall G.V. II* House. C16-C17 with C19 additions. Brick with some re-used ecclesiastical masonry. Roofs of corrugated tiles. Mid C16 house ran east-west, of 4 bays. C17 extension built south from west end cutting main facade to 3 bays but leaving it symmetrical in appearance : 2 storeys dominated by 3 storey entrance porch of c.1600. Polygonal angle shafts on moulded bases rise to moulded finials. Moulded 4-centred brick entrance within square surround and below moulded pediment. Renewed 4-light cross casement to first floor also under moulded pediment. Above this a clock face below a pediment. Shaped gable with central moulded finial. Elevation lit through one renewed 3-light cross casement each side of porch to ground floor under gauged skewback arches. 2 renewed 3-light casements to first floor. Brick platband to right of porch. Gabled roof with top storey of porch gabled back into it. Internal end stacks, both rebuilt. Mid C17 wing to left. 4 renewed casements to ground floor under gauged skewback arches and 3 to first floor. Bell based gabled roof. South gable has slight tumbling and an internal end stack. Rear of both wings largely C19 and C20. Interior largely C20. Newel stairs survive to west end with octagonal newel posts. Roof of C16 range of tie beams, diminished principals, clasped purlins originally (collars now removed) and curved windbracing. Roof of C17 range of tie beams, principals, 2 tiers butt purlins and collars.
