SP25NW WARWICK ROAD, Welcombe 604-1/2/332 (North West side) Stable block immediately to north of Welcombe Hotel

GV II

Stable block. 1860s or 70s. By Thomas Newby. For Mark Philips. Brick with ashlar dressings; slate roof with brick stacks with diagonal shafts and caps. Quadrangular plan with canted entrance front. Single storey with attic. Top ashlar cornice and ashlar-coped brick parapet. Forward break with shaped gable and finial has 4-centred carriage-way arch with continuous moulding; canted oriel above has moulded base and hipped ashlar roof, plain glazing. 2 double-chamfered mullioned and transomed windows to each side have dripmoulds, 2 attic windows under shaped gables with finials. Canted 3-window range to left has gabled end wing and similar windows, including 2 dormers; cross-axial stack with clustered shafts. Left return range has 2-storey centre with 4-centred carriage door to courtyard with 2 windows above; clock turret has louvred cupola and wind vane; varied entrances and windows, including inserted later entrances. Right return range has 4 carriage arches to courtyard with 4-centred heads and other openings; outer elevation has lean-to outshut with 2 gableted projections. 2-storey rear range has carriage way to right and altered ground floor.
