GREAT TEW NEW ROAD SP3928 (West side) 12/56 Retaining walls and steps in front of The Vicarage

GV II

Retaining wall and steps. Probably early C19. Marlstone ashlar and limestone. Wall has moulded coping and a chamfered plinth which is carried up at the base to small square piers with moulded caps, between which runs a pierced limestone balustrade in fishscale pattern with a moulded coping. The double flight of steps is recessed into the centre, the balustrade returning behind it. A central section of balustrade to the front of the steps ramps downwards to left and right with the stair. A plainer length of retaining wall, approx. 1m. high, runs approx. 20m. to left. Included for group value.
