CHASTLETON KITEBROOK SP21SW 1/37 Kitebrook House
- II
House, now school. Circa 1820, probably incorporating parts of an earlier building, with later C19 additions and alterations. Limestone ashlar with chamfered alternating angle quoins; low-pitched hipped slate roof with stone dentilled eaves cornice. 2 storeys with wide first-floor cill band. South front in 10 bays; horned glazing bar sashes including 3 on each floor to full-height canted bay to far right and in second bay from left, which has 4 windows on ground floor. Alternating with 4 contemporary French casements under loggia between canted bays. This is of wood with glazed roof and moulded entablature with ball finials supported on 8 open-work Doric columns and antae. Scattered ridge and end stacks with dentilled capping, mostly to right. Low range attached to right with round-headed window to rusticated front has later C19 conservatory attached. Service ranges to left (also possibly slightly later than main block): regularly coursed limestone rubble with low-pitched hipped slate roof. Tripartite sash window to first-floor left with another to flat-roofed projection below. Centre section has 3 glazing bar sashes on each floor. Plain first-floor cill band continues to slight projection on right which has tripartite sash window on each floor. Square projection to rear on right of main range has blind Doric portico with central half-glazed door under segmental pediment and fixed-light windows with triangular pediments approached by straight flight of 8 steps. Various C19 ranges attached to rear of service range. Interior. Raised and carved C19 fireplace surrounds throughout ground floor. Open-well staircase with rather heavy turned balusters. Said tobe more panelled rooms on first floor. Conservatory (now with swimming pool inserted) has C19 cast-iron roof trusses. [2478]
