5/98 Whiston Hall and carriage entrance attached to NE - corner

G.V. II

Country House and carriage entrance. C1800 (remodelling of an earlier house). Red brick and sandstone, plain wooden cornice to projecting eaves, 2 rendered axial ridge stacks and brick end stack to left, low pitched hipped slate roof. 3 storeys; 1:2:1 windows slightly recessed in centre, glazing bar sashes, 3 light bow windows to left and right on ground floor are later additions; entrance on- right hand return front under Ionic porch. Pedimented carriage entrance with segmental arch to courtyard attached to. north-east corner. Mid C19 2 storeyed addition to left. The nature of the sandstone walling and the presence of blocked window openings in the left hand bay are evidence for an earlier house.
