5/40 Chilton Grove -
GV II
House. Dated 1740, south-east front remodelled circa 1830-40. Red brick, cement-rendered to front (lined as ashlar); plain tile roof. Irregular L-plan house; refaced in Greek Revival style. 2 and 3 storeys. Plinth, moulded cornice, coped parapet; verge parapets and integral brick end stacks; 1:5:1 bays, slightly projecting end pavilions with triangular pediments; glazing bar sashes (4-pane on ground floor); pair of central half-glazed doors with moulded architrave and porch consisting of pairs of unfluted Doric columns supporting entablature and blocking course. C18 lead downpipes with moulded rainwater heads. Left-hand gable with rectangular datestone: "J/WM/1740". 2 projecting gabled wings at right- angles to rear with stack in valley between. Interior: largely circa 1830-40; 3-light square-well stone staircase with stick balusters; panelled ground-floor north-east room; panelled doors and shutters throughout.
