Burton memorial approximately 20 metres to south-west of Longner Hall

Chest tomb. Mid-C16, probably restored in early C19. Grey sandstone
ashlar. Cyma recta moulded plinth, frieze, and flat top. Painted
inscription to north: "HERE LYETH THE BODY/OF/EDWARD BURTON ESQ/WHO DIED ANNO
DOMINI 1558" and on frieze all round; north: "Was it for denying Christ
or some notorious fact/That this mans body Christian Burial lack't?";
west: "Oh no! not so his faithful true profession/was the chill cause
which then was held transgression/When popery here did reign, the see of
Rome/Would not admit to any such a tomb"; south: "Within her Idol
temple walls; but be/Truely professing Christianity"; east: "Was like
Christ Jesus in a Garden laid,/Where he shall rest in peace till it be
said,/Come faithful servant come receive with me/A just reward for thine
integrity". Painted shields in frieze to east and west. The painted
inscription possibly dates from or was restored in the early C19. Edward
Burton of Longner was refused burial at St Chad's Church, Shrewsbury, the
parish in which Longner was then situated.
