HODNET C.P. HODNET PARK SJ 6028-6128 SJ 60928 28184 13/69 Dovecote approx. 95 metres 10.2.86 to north-west of Garden Cottage (Formerly listed as Dovecote at Home Farm, Hodnet Hall)

Dovecote. Dated 1656. Red brick (English bond) with some vitrified headers and grey sandstone ashlar dressings. Plain tile roof. Brick plinth, flush stone quoins, moulded stone string course with band of recessed lozenge-shaped panels above (with evidence of former render at time of survey - April 1986) and parapeted gable ends with stone copings and moulded stone kneelers. Central square wooden glover with segmental- arched openings and pyramidal roof with finial. One storey and loft. 2-light double-chamfered mullioned stone loft window in each gable end with pair of recessed diaper panels above each (with evidence of former render in each panel at time of survey). Boarded door to north with strap hinges, chamfered stone surround with stops, and large cambered lintel. 3 recessed arched panels above door with impost blocks and keystones, that in centre is larger and has smaller recessed panel within with billet-ornamented terracotta surround and the inscription: "TM 1656 IM". Left-hand panel has remains of carved stone or terracotta head (evidence of former render in each panel at time of survey). Probably inserted mid-C19 segmental-headed doorway to south. Interior: 2 ground-floor chambers. Southern chamber with brick nesting boxes in walls. Northern chamber and loft not inspected. Garden cottage is not included on this list.
