18/147 Wall enclosing Churchyard - of Saint Andrew
GV II
Churchyard wall. Early and late C18 and late C19. Dressed and roughly dressed red sandstone with uncoursed red sandstone additions. The church of Saint Andrew (q.v.) stands on a raised circular platform; the early C18 section of the wall follows the line of the south-east quarter of the platform but the churchyard was enlarged to the north and west in the late C18 and C19 and the wall rebuilt. C18 dressed chamfered coping; C19 roughly dressed chamfered coping. A coping block on the south- east section of wall is inscribed: "John Harpar And/William Joron (?)/ Wardens 172-". The inscription is not completely legible (January 1986). The raised platform suggests the site might have an early origin.
