Details
ACTON BURNELL C.P. ACTON BURNELL PARK SJ 50 SW SJ 5345 0142 6/20 The Shell House approx. - 550 metres to south of Acton Burnell Hall - II Grotto. Said to be circa 1750. Rustic coursed and squared sandstone with domed roof. Octagonal plan. Pairs of rectangular windows flanking doorway to north-west. Interior: the upper parts of the walls and the dome are covered with shells in a radial design with a central boss, and shell patterns and pictures in the panels; there are Chinese-type glazed picture tiles on the lower part of the walls and there was formerly a continuous bench around the walls,and a central table, the base of which survives. The grotto stands on the north-western slopes of Acton Burnell Hill within the park of Acton Burnell Hall. Barbara Jones, Follies and Grottos, Constable, 1953, Pp. 169 and 379.
