Lychgate and churchyard wall. Circa 1878, by William Eden Nesfield.
Lychgate with half-height tooled yellow/grey sandstone ashlar walls,
timber-framed superstructure and hipped plain tile roof. Walls with moulded
copings. Moulded arched-braced openings and curved brackets to front
and back. Wooden balustrading to side openings with billet-ornamented
rails. Pair of wooden gates to front: two trefoiled segmental-headed openings
with wrought-iron finials, and wrought-iron strap hinges. Interior with
three stone steps, and roof with collar trusses, rafters with shaped ends,
and plastered soffit. Copper plate inside to right, inscribed: "TO THE
GLORY OF GOD, AND IN THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE OF FRANCES ELIZABETH HEYWOOD-
LONSDALE, THIS LAMP / IS PLACED HERE BY THE PARISHONERS OF CALVERHALL.
EASTER 1903 / "LET YOUR LIGHT SO SHINE BEFORE MEN, THAT THEY MAY SEE YOUR
GOOD WORKS, / AND GLORIFY YOUR FATHER WHICH IS IN HEAVEN"". Lamp not
in situ at time of survey (October 1986). Flanking sandstone ashlar
churchyard walls with chamfered and moulded coping. Formerly with
wrought-iron railings. Short section of curved wall to right linking lychgate
and tower of the Church of the Holy Trinity (q.v.), also by Nesfield.
