GV II*
Detached country house. Built 1782 for John Rogers, extended 1911. Cary stone roughly cut and squared, but with red
brick east and south facades having boulting stone dressings; hipped Welsh slate roof; brick chimney stacks with
moulded stone caps. Two storeys with attics; east elevation of 3 bays, of which the centre projects slightly and has a
gabled parapet. Plinth, band course, cornice and plain parapet with moulded coping; 12-pane sash window in
architraves, that to the centre first floor having ears and heels; lower outer bays have Venetian windows, and central
bay has doorway with Tuscan pilaster surround with full entablature under flat hood, flanked by 2 slim sash windows in
shell-head architraved panels, but these are C20 additions. South elevation of 9 bays to match, of which bays 5 to 9
are of C18, and bays 1 to 4 are of 1911; some minor variations of detail, including French door with anse-de-panier
arched head to lower bay 4. On west side a flat-roofed extension with parapet and ball finials to corners. North
elevation rather plain, and modified in the C20; main entrance now in this elevation. The interior of the house seems
little altered, and has 6- panel doors in panelled reveals, almost Regency in style; plain dadoes; a variety of ceiling
cove mouldings of C18; fine curved cantilevered wood staircase on north side: one good C18 fireplace in hall; the
remainder removed at some time, but now replaced with a variety of French C18 fireplaces, including one in marble and
one in scagliola. The C20 additions nicely detailed.
