II

School Hall. 1919-24. By A J Pictor FRIBA of Bath and Bruton. Local stone cut and squared, with Doulting stone dressings; Westmorland slates between gables, each of which is crowned with an openwork finial. "U"-plan of which the South East wing is 2 storeys; hall of 7 bays, projecting wings of 4 bays, with further projection Southwards to South East wing; single storey flat roofed corridor between wings. In a C16 Gothic style. North East facade has small 2-light windows to corridor, with central projecting porch having 4-centre moulded archway in a flat headed recess, with carved spandrils, plaque over, and raked parapet; to remainder of building there are offset buttresses between bays, none on corners; 3-light pointed arched traceried windows to hall, 2-storey angled bays with 4-light transomed windows to East end of projections; elsewhere the Gothic detail consistent and well handled; hall has good timberwork roof, and generally a good example of the genre; the whole said to be modelled on Wadham College, Oxford, with which the school has links.
