4/58 Barn about 20 metres west of
Kingstone Farmhouse
GV II
Barn. Before 1600, modified later. Ham stone cut and squared, some ashlar; double Roman clay tiled roof between coped
gables with finials. Nine bays. South gable has angled corner buttresses, with buttresses on east wall, representing
the last fragments of the medieval, possibly a tithe barn, with vent slits and a now blocked chamfered pointed arched
doorway: the three south trusses are heavy collar trusses with mortice-and-tenon apex joint and three rows of heavy
trenched purlins of irregular spacing, with windbraces in lower panel; two trusses further north are jointed crucks,
the remainder comparatively late. Attached to the east of the building was a thatched half-hipped roof building with at
least one jointed cruck possibly of 1600, now ruinous. The barn older than the farmhouse (q,v), and apparently modified
c1600, at about the time the present farmhouse was built. (VAG Report, unpublished SRO, March 1984).
