ST 7748 SE 5/57 GV Monmouth House 22.1.49 and gate piers to road II

2. A good C18 town house. Main front at right angles to street. Ashlar with hipped tiled mansard roof. Moulded cornice. Parapet with coping. 2 storeys, basement and attic. 3 gabled dormers. 5 windows in architraves C19 casements, 2 on ground floor with little balconies, sashes with glazing bars to basement. Central panelled door under pedimented entablature. Steps up to door with panelled piers. 3 bay 3 storey return to street with band over ground (basement) floor. 2 right- hand bays, blind with sash rebates. Segmental headed mid C19 half-glazed door in architrave to left. Modern shop front to right. Panelled chimney over right hand bay. Squat rustic piers with reed moulded capping to former garden. Interior: panelled shutters on ground floor. Entrance hall has plaster replicas of the Parthenon frieze (in part) above doors of flanking rooms, by Henning 1819.
