MARKET PLACE 1. 1133 (East Side) No 8 ST 4938 7/87 21.6.50. II GV 2. Previously known as Abbey Gate Restaurant. Late C18 painted brick to late medieval timber-frame building with some rubble. 2 storeys. Hipped pantile roof. Parapet coping. 4 windows. Keyblocks. Fixed lights, glazing bars. Modern shop-fronts. Interior retains much of its original timber-work, a pointed arch with abbatial arms, 4-centred fireplace etc. Said to be originally part of the Abbey school. The listed buildings on the East side, the Market Cross, Nos 2 to 12 (even) High Street, Abbey Gatehouse, Town Hall and St Dunstan's House, Magdalene Street all form a very important group.
