Pair of houses and attached area balustrades and gate piers. c1838-39, probably by PF Robinson, and street front c1848-50 by TC Hine of Nottingham, for the 4th Duke of Newcastle. Altered mid C19 and mid C20. Stucco with slate roofs and 4 coped side wall stacks. Rusticated basement, first floor band and sill band, eaves cornice and blocking course, coped gables. Windows are mainly renewed plain sashes. 2 storeys plus basement; 4 window range. Garden front has a glazing bar sash and a plain sash to the basement, flanked by French windows. Upper floors have 4 windows in diminishing courses, with moulded surrounds. Between the windows, giant Doric pilasters. To right, a set back side bay, 2 windows. Street front has a projecting centre, 2 storeys, with 2 coped gables. 2 stucco Classical doorcases with fluted pilasters, pediments and original 6-panel doors with overlights. Single side windows. Above, 4 small sashes. Side bays have a triple sash on each floor. Outside, flanking the porch, 3m lengths of coped balustrade to the area, and at each end, a pair of square gate piers with pyramidal caps. INTERIOR: No.21 has some original plasterwork and marble fireplaces. This building is part of an early scheme by the 4th Duke of Newcastle to develop the Park Estate.
