8/41 Milepost at NGR ST 2328 1382

II

Milepost. Circa 1840. Allen and Co of Taunton, iron founders. Cast iron. Trigangular in plan, hollow in section, sloping top, plinth with name of iron founders set beneath ground level. Inscribed in raised lettering right "TAUNTON 8", left "HONITON 10 3/8". The Honiton and Ilminster Trust obtained consent to turnpike the section of road from Shoreditch, south of Taunton, to the Devon border by an Act of 1840. An almost complete set of mileposts survives along the road. (Bentley, J.B and Murless, B.J Somerset Roads- The Legacy of the Turnpikes, 1985).
