10/231 The Caravel Hotel, No. 10 and Hand-rails and 26.4.68. Railings attached. (formerly listed as the Lynes Woodshop, No. 9 and No. 10) GV II House, once 2 houses and shop, now Hotel and house. C15, with late C16 alterations, and early-to-mid C19 alterations and partial rebuilding. Timber framed. Painted tile-hanging to hall range and left end bay (Caravel Hotel), with plain tile roof. Right end bay (No. 10) red brick to front, left side tile-hung on 2nd floor, slate roof. Rear ground and first-floor walls of hall range and No. 10 flint and stone with stone dressings. Wealden of which 2 unequal-length bays of hall survive. Front of hall built out in late C16. Left and right end bays rebuilt with 3 storeys in 2 periods in early-to-mid C19, with left end bay projecting slightly. Left end bay and No. 10 3 storeys, No. 10 with basement. Hall range 2 storeys and attics. Moulded wood eaves cornice to left bay and plain projecting eaves to right. End bays hipped to Square. Red brick stack to rear of left bay of hall and gault brick stack to rear of No. 10. Hall range has 2 hipped dormers. Irregular fenestration of one sash to 2nd floor and on glazing-bar sash to first floor of left end bay, 2 first-floor glazing-bar sashes to first floor of hall range, and one glazing-bar sash with rubbed brick voussoirs to each of upper floors of No. 10. Tripartite ground-floor window to No. 10 with rubbed brick voussoirs rising to segment over central light. Canted bay shop window to right of hall range, with modillioned cornice which continues to left to form continuous canopy over doors. Recessed panelled door with 2 glazed lights to left end bay of Hotel, up 3 steps, with curved iron hand-rails. Doorcase with reeded pilasters, patterae, and frieze. 2 C20 doors to hall range, one glazed to left, and one half- glazed and panelled to left of centre. Recessed half-glazed door to No. 10 up 4 steps with handrail either side which returns to right as spear- headed area railings. Architrave with reeded pilasters and flat corniced hood. Later additions to rear. Interior: Moulded crown-post with remains of heavily moulded cambered tie-beam to hall range. Inserted hall floor late C16, with multiple roll mouldings to axial beam and joists, C16 first-floor front wall posts to former hall with splayed bases. Arch-braced studded wall of a separately-framed right end bay or cross-wing survives embedded in wall between hall range and early C19 right end bay. C19 features to No. 10.
