Details

NEWTON HARCOURT SP 69 NW 2/126 29.12.66 Entrance Gateway with Lodge and attached Outbuilding (now Stable End, Middle flat, Studio Flat, and Drying Green Cottage) together with Garden Walls at Manor House. GV II Entrance gateway, lodge, and outbuilding, (now 4 dwellings), and garden walls. Earlier C17 and C19 with C20 alterations. Ashlar, red brick diapered with black brick in part, and Swithland slate and pantile roofs. Earlier C17 gateway of ashlar with segmental arch and imposts. Either side a fluted pilaster with reversed taper. Entablature over with coping and end finials. Lodge of c1830, partly rebuilt C20, is rendered and shingle-clad with black glazed pantile roof and brick end stack. Gable facing has 5-light canted bay, with leaded lights and 2-light casement over. On right side a porch with Tudor arch and door, 1-light leaded casement to right and similar 2-light over. The outbuilding of 1.1/2 storeys is of brick with rubble stone plinth and has Swithland slate front and pantile rear roofs, 2 and 3-light C20 casements, 2 dormers and buttresses. Doors to rear. Inside are visible tie-beam trusses with clasped principals. The walls, in part probably of C17, are of brick, diapered in part, coped with brick and black glazed pantiles, c2.1/2m high, and form a forecourt to Manor House (q.v.) and border garden to left of lodge. V.C.H., Vol.V and Pevsner.
