6/107 Stableblock at Nevill Holt Hall Preparatory School 21.7.66

GV II* Stableblock, now classrooms, workshops, gym and swimming pool. Late C17, with additions and alterations C18 and C19. Coursed rubble stone with quoins and stone dressings and Collyweston slate hipped roof with 4 moulded stone ridge stacks. Plinth and battlemented parapet. Large central clock turret. 2 storey ranges round quadrangle with carriage entraces in the middle of each side, that on left open, and between 2 blocks. Front, with only pedestrian entrances, has, on 1st floor, 8 3-light stone mullion windows with leaded lights. 6 similar windows on ground floor (2-light to far left and right in blocked wider frame.) A doorway centre left and centre right. Moulded stone frame with 4-centred arch, keystone and hood mould. Above is a panel with pilaster strips either side and central wider strip with carved cartouche. Moulded cornice. This front has an ashlar pedimented central section. Moulded stone central doorway with 4-centred arch, keystone and hood mould. To either side a pilaster with stopped flutes. Above is a semicircular pediment and central cartouche. Over this, at eaves level, the pediment proper with moulded cornice and central projecting panel. The battlements continue over this pediment. The C18 clock turret is on the roof ridge above this central section. Lead and painted wood. A leaded and moulded base with small 1-light. Above ridge level a square turret with moulded corner pilasters and projecting cornice. Clockfaces to front and right. Above is an open octagonal lantern with diamond-pattern balustrade. Leaded octagonal ogee roof with weathervane. On left and right ends are further 3-light stone mullion windows with leaded lights and hood moulds. On right end a probably C19 ashlar central gabled section with carriage archway. Segmental 4-centred arch with hood mould. Blank tablet over. Battlements continue over gable. Rainwater head dated 1805. Pevsner, and V.C.H., Vol. V.
