THE SQUARE (West Side)
No. 4

II
Cottage. Late C16/C17 with later alterations. Colourwashed red brick partly
timber framed and rendered, and Welsh slate roof with brick ridge stack.
Gable facing. 2 storeys of a 3/3 sash window over similar with cambered lintel.
Door to left. On right side a 2-light and a 3-light centre-opening casement,
the latter with shutters. The 1st floor above, although rendered, appears
to be 1 long bay of close-studded timber framing. On rear a 3-light casement
above 1 storey extension with plain tile roof and end stack. 3-light centre-
opening casement with shutters. To rear of this extension a similar further
outhouse extension with 1-light. Inside on 1st floor are visible wall posts,
tie beam trusses to single purlin roof, some close studding (said to be with
wattle and daub nogging) and a newel staircase. It has been suggested that
this cottage is the cross wing of an otherwise demolished medieval house.
