Small country house; C17 with substantial early C18 remodelling,
possibly by William Sands the Younger. (c/f. peaked parapet at
Wyberton Hall, Nr. Boston). Iron gutter remains dated 1710.
Coursed limestone rubble with brick quoins
and first floor band and ashlar dressings. Plain tiled roof with
plain parapet surmounted by peaked pediment having central acorn finial,
stonecoped gables with finials at the bases, and 2 moulded gable stacks.
Parallel ranges 2 storey, 5 bay front with cellars. Central half glazed
door with traceried overlight flanked by engaged Tuscan columns supporting
a moulded pediment over. To either side of the door are pairs of windows
with plain ashlar frames. On the first floor are 5 similar windows; all
windows are glazing bar sashes. To the right is a gabled single storey
wing, the rear parts of which are C17. Inside the house is a good
early C18 staircase to full height with delicate turned balusters and
ramped handrails at the angles. The back stair has an unusual openwork
balustrade in the Chinese taste. In the dining room is a cupboard
having a moulded surround with keystone, a pulvinated frieze and a
pediment; also an early C19 fireplace and dado panelling. First floor
chamber on right has a stone fireplace with panelled surround and a
fluted keystone; also a cupboard with a dentillated frieze. Section of early-C18 wallpaper survives in situ on north wall of master bedroom. Frescoes in the sitting room, dining room, library, master bedroom and second bedroom were executed by Russian artists in 2012. Rear range has a late C17 staggered butt purlin softwood roof.
