2/58 Walls at Entrance to
House of Correction
G.V. II
Walls and small gateway approaching the House of Correction from
south. c.1825, C20. Red brick, limestone ashlar. 2 rectangular
ashlar piers with moulded cornices and shallow, pointed tops
stand, several yards apart, near road side. Ashlar coped brick
walls are attached to north of each pier and rise up the slope
towards the House of Correction curving towards each other. They
are joined by a C20 ashlar coped brick wall with railings and
gates and 4 C20 ashlar topped brick piers. The walls continue
northwards beyond this gateway and terminate just in front of the
entrance to the House of Correction. Included for group value
only.
