ASLACKBY AND AVELAND'S WAY TF 03 SE LAUGHTON (north side) 3/5 Aslackby Manor House 30.10.68 G.V. I

Manor house. C16, c.1660, late C18, early C19, C20. Red brick, coursed limestone rubble, some timber framing. Plain tiled roofs with stone coped west gables and ornate brick Dutch gables to north and south, 2 gable and single ridge stacks, 2 with paired angle shafts. T-plan. Part of C16 timber frame hall house to west, encased in rubble in C18 and now of 2 storeys and 3 bays. Plinth. Doorway to right with segmental head, overlight and plank door. 2 two light casements to left, both with segmental heads. 3 two light casements above with wooden lintels. C17 red brick cross wing in the Fen Artisan Mannerist style. 2 storeys with attic. Rubble plinth. 2 bay south end with 2 three light casements with transom, segmental heads and broad, raised, moulded brick keystones. 2 similar windows above with a single smaller, but similar window in garret. The wall space between the windows is articulated by meandering bands, pilasters, rectangular plaques, shields and simple, squat pendentives, all moulded in brick. East front of 6 irregular bays with doorway to left with moulded wooden doorcase, plank door and raised brick moulded keystone set high above, as probably part of original porch no longer extant. 2 two light cross mullion windows to left with another to the right, with 2 three light windows with transoms, beyond. All the ground floor windows with segmental heads and broad, raised, moulded brick keystones. Meandering moulded first floor brick band above. 2 cross mullion windows above to left with wooden lintels. 2 shields to left. 3 shields to right, all moulded in brick. 3 light window with transom to right with flat band above, 2 moulded brick shields beyond with a 4 light window with transom to right and 3 moulded brick shields beyond. Single 3 light attic casement with segmental head set in small gable above fourth bay from left. North end with single 2 light sliding sash with segmental head, to right. Meandering first floor band with 3 pilasters above alternating with 4 shields, a triangle above those broken through by a single central pilaster, all in moulded brick. Brick moulded oval staircase window in narrow north-west side. Early C19 range attached to right with doorway to left with segmental head and plank door. 2 three light sliding sashes to right with segmental heads. 3 two light sliding sashes with wooden lintels, above. C14 rubble wall continues to right with line of quoins and simple doorway beyond. Internal 2 storey timber frame box panelled wall just to west of where cross wing was added to C16 hall. C17 wing with dining room with mid C18 fielded pine panelling with marbling, marbled fluted pilasters between the windows and flanking fireplace, the latter with 3 panels of studs and half circles, also marbled. Early C18 fielded oak panelling in first floor parlour with bolection moulded fireplace with mantle, moulded doorcase, and bolection moulded cornice. Various chamfered beams with triangular stops. Smoke blackened roof timbers over C16 wing with signs of having been truncated to west and some re-assembling. Single purlin on each side, tie beams intact, collars replaced in C20. An outstanding example of Fen Artisan Mannerism.
