LONG WHATTON MAIN STREET SK 4723 13/187 No 1 (The Wheel House) - II

House, part formerly used as smithy and wheelwright workshop. Front wing has 2 bays of c1780 to right and raised 2-bay C19 extension to left. Wing at right- angles to rear consists of a 2-bay early C18 block with former outbuildings beyond possibly of C17 date, with gabled end bay much altered c1900. Refur- bished C20. FRONT WING is of red brick with dentil eaves, plain tile roof and brick chimney between right bays. Late C18 bays to right have boxed 4-pane sashes, those to ground floor with cambered heads, and central 4-panelled door with rectangular fanlight. Wooden doorcase with pilasters, frieze and cornice. Sun Fire insurance plaque above. Flush-panelled door in right gable end. Mid C19 bays to left have been raised C20 and have 3-light horizontal sashes, that to ground floor right with cambered head, the left window in former cart entry. REAR WING: early C18 block is of brick on rubble stone base, with plain tile roof and brick chimney to rear left corner. 2 storeys and attic; 2 bays. Later fenestration with C19 3-light wooden casement to ground floor left, C20 French doors to right and 2 single lights, one blocked, to first floor. 2-light hori- zontal sash in left gable. Beyond are 2 timber framed bays with rough timbers, brick infil and pantile roof. Left bay has C20 4-light barred wooden casement; right bay has C20 board door. At far end is a gabled projection with c1900 timber framing and later C20 4-light leaded window. Interior of early C18 block has stop-chamfered spine beams, and trusses with ogee principals, the centre truss with collar arched over doorway.
