LONG WHATTON WHATTON HOUSE GROUNDS SK 42 SE 5/213 Pagoda and Goddess in Chinese garden GV II

Garden ornament, with statue of goddess in a pagoda. Late C19. STATUE is of Chinese or Japanese origin, made of bronze, and depicts a standing goddess with a small figure of a Buddha on her headdress. Statue has a 3-legged stand. PAGODA is of wood, tile-hung on the outside with internal decoration of patterned wooden strips. Tented pantile roof on scrolled wrought iron trusses. Part of the Chinese garden laid out by the first Lord Crawshaw, c1890-1900. (Country Life, February 21st 1985, p.456-7)
