MALDEN ROAD 1. 4430 (South-West Side) CHEAM Underground Room to rear of No 5 TQ 2463 NW 29/102 II 2. An underground chamber to rear of No 5, probably used for storage and probably of late C17 date; only surviving example of several found in Cheam. A steep flight of steps leads down to rectangular space with walls of limestone masonry and brick barrel vaulted roof [Flemish bond]; round-headed arches in centre of each long wall and in rear wall to west; a flight of steps leads down to a further depth from the latter. Iron rings in wall. Possibly used as a food store for Cheam School when it occupied Whitehall. See "Nonsuch and Ewell Antiquarian Society Bulletin" for July 1966, p 5.
