Details
TQ 2980 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER PALL MALL SW1 81/58 ;82/1 (South side) Nos 83 to 85 (consec.) GV II Office building, extension to R.A.C. Club. 1911-15 by Henry Metcalf and Thomas R. Greig. Stone faced, slate roof. Monumental but restrained classical composition with a few Beaux Arts details. 5 storeys and basement. Symmetrical 9 bay front. Channelled ground and 1st floor read as one basement storey. Doorways in bays 1, 5 and 9 with architraves, pulvinated friezes and cornices linked to eared architraved segmental arched and triple keystoned windows above. The upper floors have architrave surrounds with cornices on 2nd floor and tablets on 3rd floor. Those in line with doorways are vertically linked in single architrave to 2nd and 3rd floors with enriched aprons and prominent open segmental pediments on console corbels above 3rd floor. The frieze of the crowning entablature is broken by the heads of 4th floor windows; dentilled bed to modillion cornice and balustraded parapet. The horizontal articulation of the facade lines through with that of the adjoining R.A.C. facade. Included for group interest with Mewes and Davis's R.A.C. Club, q.v. Survey of London; vol XXIX
