Details

TQ 2781 NE CITY OF WESTMINSTER WYNDHAM PLACE, W1 43/38 St Marleybone Western National 5.2.70 School G.V. II Former parish school. 1824 (with some alteration). Stock brick with some painted stone dressings; concealed slate roof. Slight Greek Revival detail. 3 storeys and basement. Entrance bay flanked by single bay advanced pavilions; 9-window return to York Street. Large former doorway to centre in stone architrave with console-brackets to block-cornice; semicircular arched recessed sash window to 1st floor and stone pedimented tablet at 2nd floor level inscribed "St. Mary-le-Bone Western National Schools 1824". Flanking pavilions have 2 storey semicircular arched recesses containing semicircular arched windows at 1st floor level, left hand blocked and right hand adapted as 2 windows; recessed tripartite sashes in architrave surrounds to 2nd floor. Stone plinth, 1st floor plat band broken on pavilions by the arched recesses which have moulded stone impost bands. Parapet with coping to centre and shallow stone pediments to pavilions. The return (lowered from 4 to 3 storeys) has recessed glazing bar sashes under flat gauged arches. Cast iron area railings with acorn heads and egg shaped finials.
