7/15 Two attached barns to rear of Hill Top farmhouse
II
Two attached barns. Possibly late C16 with early C18 alteration and addition. Coursed rubble, stone slate and pantile roofs. L-shaped, each barn of 4 bays. Western barn: has earlier C16 roof trusses. Quoins. Tall cart-entry, set in 3rd bay, has wooden lintel and harr-hung doors. To left, 2 doorways with wooden lintels, one blocked, flank window below wooden-framed pitching-hole (blocked) and another pitching hole to right of doorway (glazed). Several small triangular ventilators (blocked). Steeply-pitched roof with coped gable with kneelers. At right angles C18 northern barn breaks forward: 1st bay has paired doorways with tie-stone jambs. 2nd bay has similar doorway with lintel raised and altered to form a window with another above to left under eaves, a former pitching hole now glazed. Set in 3rd bay is wide cart-entry with composite jambs and segmental-arch with sandstone voussoirs and skewbacks. Stonework above disturbed. Weathervane to left gable.
Interior: western barn: fine C16 king-post roof with tall stop-chamfered king posts and steeply-angled struts. The soffit of the tie beam of the 2nd truss has mortices for posts, braces, and close studding. Curved braces to ridge. Northern barn: C18 oak king-post roof with single angle struts.
