Details
TQ 2881 NW CITY OF WESTMINSTER GEORGE STREET, W1 44/54 (north side) Nos. 26 to 32 (even) Durrant's Hotel G.V. II Hotel. c.1780-1800 Portman Estate terrace apparently altered early C.19 as hotel, and with some mid C.20 modification. Stock brick with stucco dressings and stuccoed ground floor; slate roof. Principal feature is the use of a Tower of the Winds derived pilaster order articulating upper floors. 4 storeys and basement. 16-window wide George Street front, the windows grouped in pairs, and 11-window Manchester Street return with windows grouped in rhythm 3;4;4. Coupled column, Tower of the Winds porch in 2nd bay from right. Recessed sashes, most with glazing bars, those on ground floor with blind semicircular arches linked by moulded imposts, those on upper floors under flat gauged arches. Guilloche moulded plat band finishes off ground floor; the pilaster order articulates the window groups and rises to frieze, dentil cornice and blocking course; continuous sill band to 3rd floor. The 1st bay of windows to return are blind and an access way has been inserted at far end.
