TQ 2781 NE CITY OF WESTMINSTER GLOUCESTER PLACE, Wl 43/29 (West side) 14.1.70 Nos. 99 to 111 (odd) G.V. II Terrace of town houses. c.1800-20 Portman Estate development. Stock brick with channelled stucco ground floors. 4 storeys and basements, some added dormered mansards. 3-window wide fronts. Semicircular arched doorways to left, except for No. 99; panelled doors, Greek Doric columned side lights and Coade imposts, under delicately patterned fanlights with lead ornament. Recessed sashes, some with glazing bars, under flat gauged arches to upper floors. Plat band finishing off stucco ground floor; crowning stucco cornices and blocking courses. Original, cast iron, geometric, and anthemion patterned 1st floor balconies. Cast iron area railings with urn finials. No. 99, Victorianised with added architraves and parapet, has G.L.C. plaque recording residence of Elizabeth Barrett (Browning). Part of one of the most extensive and intact sequences of Georgian terraced homes in London.
