Details
TQ 2981 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER FRITH STREET, Wl 58/43 No. 5 14.1.70 GV II Terrace house. c.1731 probably by Joel Johnson, bricklayer. Red lintel brick, concealed roof. 4 storeys (top floor later C18 addition) and basement. 3 windows wide. Entrance to left, 6 panel door with rectangular fanlight recessed in stone architrave case with carved stone consoles to cornice. Segmental gauged arched windows with recessed box frames, some retaining sashes others with later casements. Stone sill band to 1st floor and a moulded stone cornice below attic storey, parapet with coping. Wrought iron area railings with urn finials. Rear wall of purple-red brick with segmental arched box framed sashes. Interior with closet wing, fully panelled with fielded panelling to hall and front rooms, box cornices, original chimneypiece to front room ground floor; the hall opening to staircase has fluted Doric pilasters with dosserets and the fine staircase is dog legged with cut and carved strings up to 1st floor and closed above with moulded tread nosings and alternating turned and twisted balusters, moulded handrail scrolled in volute to foot and columnar newels etc. Survey of London; Vol. XXXIII
