HORWICH, CHORLEY OLD ROAD (north side), Building at Former Arcon Engineering approx. 30m north-east of Walsuches House (q.v.)

Former factory building. Late C18 and early C19. For Walsuches Bleach Works. Dressed stone and brick with hipped slate roof. 2 storeys, 5 bays, the 2nd and 4th bays break forward. 1st storey of brick; top frieze and cornice. Windows have narrow lintels and are sashed with glazing bars, but window to 2nd bay of 1st floor is blind. Round- headed entrances with imposts and keys to 2nd and 4th bays; that to 2nd bay is blocked, that to 4th bay has doorcase and fanlight, C20 door. Walsuches Bleach Works, founded 1775, was one of the 1st chemical bleach works in the country. A rare and early example of a bleach works building.
