Details

SADDLEWORTH HUDDERSFIELD ROAD SD 91 SE (north side) Denshaw 1/162 Christ Church, 19/6/67 Denshaw - II Church. "1863" above door. Built for Henry Gartside. Rock- faced stone with slate roof. Nave with clerestory, aisles, west tower and chancel. Aisles have projecting plinth and flat buttresses. Each of 2 bays has a triple cusped lancet window and porch in bay one has coped gable with kneelers. Quatrefoil clerestory windows. 5-light east window with geometrical tracery. Gabled organ chamber and chapel to either side of chancel. Steeply pitched roof with coped gables and kneelers. The 3-stage tower has 3-light first stage window a clock face in the second, 2-light belfry openings, castellated papapet with stepped merlons and pierced trefoils and corner pinnacles. Interior: double-chamfered nave arcade arches on circular columns with moulded capitals. Arch-braced roof trusses. Gartside chapel has stone altar in cusped recess. Stained glass. Octagonal stone pulpit.
