NZ 15 NW CONSETT A 694

(North side) Hamsterley 1/4 Derwentcote Lodge

GV II Lodge to Derwentcote Hall (now demolished). Mid C19. Sandstone rubble with ashlar plinth, quoins and painted brick and ashlar dressings; Welsh slate roof. One storey, 3 bays. Central boarded door with moulded fillets in segmental- headed painted brick surround with deep concave moulding and flower-stopped drip mould; similar treatment to 2-centred-arched windows, with jambs in style of alternate blocks, and intersecting glazing bars. Low-pitched roof has projecting eaves and wooden gutters on shaped brackets; central rubble chimney with 2 diagonally-set square stone shafts and round yellow pots. Right one- storey, one-bay C20 extension in similar style with plain 2-light window; left return to road has one Gothic-style window with intersecting glazing bars, under moulded diamond-shaped panel in gable peak; decorated bargeboards with carved shaft supporting spear finial. C20 rear extension not of special interest.
