Lower Fold Farmhouse and

Farmhouse and Cottage. Timber-framed structure probably of
C17 which is encased in C18 and C19 brick. Cottage in
hammer-dressed stone has lintel inscribed "TAI 1710".
Graduated stone slate roof. 3-unit 2-storey plan with later
lean-to addition against rear and Cottage projecting as a 2-
unit baffle-entry crosswing to left. The house is
characterised by 3 equal gables, the window and door
openings having stone lintels and sills probably of C19.
Ridge and gable chimney stacks. The timber frame is only
revealed externally in the right gable-end which exposes a
jowled post supporting a tie-beam roof truss. The Cottage
projects, the original door with ogee-moulded timber frame
and dated lintel is within the angle and is now blocked. A
later door was added to the gable which has a fire window
(left) and small arched light at first floor level. Windows
to left are later but rear retains a 2-light double-
chamfered mullion window. Interior: central room of house
against rear wall has a splat-baluster staircase with
triple-roll-moulded oak handrail of unusual quality. The
ovolo-moulded newel post has an acorn finial. Chamfered
ceiling beams with stepped stops are supported on the
principal posts which are visible from the inside only. The
Cottage has an inglenook fireplace with ovolo-moulded heck
post and deep bressumer beam with similar moulding.
