Details

SADDLEWORTH RYEFIELDS DRIVE SE 00 NW Uppermill 4/264 Ryefields and Ryefields - Cottage - II House and cottage. Late C18 with early C19 alterations. Hammer-dressed watershot stone with graduated stone slate roof. Double-depth plan with a total of 6 bays and 3 storeys and with later wing to rear. The cottage (left) postdates the house and has an early C19 porch with 4-centred arch doorway and coped gable, an altered ground floor window and 4 and 1-light recessed flat-faced stone mullion windows. Rusticated door surround to gable. The house has a similar porch with canted bay window to left and square bay window to right all of C19 date. The first and second floors each have two 4 and two 2-light recessed flat-faced stone mullion windows. Early C19 coped parapet above an eaves band which has 6 niches below small gablets. 4 ridge chimney stacks with cornices. Coped gables with kneelers. Arched window and a porch to right gable. Door with arched head to rear and 3, 4 and 11-light recessed flat-faced mullion windows, many retaining original leaded panes. 2 blocked taking-in doors. Panelled entrance hall and other fittings dating from the early C19 alteration. B. Barnes, Saddleworth Heritage, 1975.
