7/282 Chapel of Bluecoat School 14.3.75 G.V. II*

Chapel. 1903-6. Briggs, Wolstenholme and Thornley. Brick with stone dressings. Greek-cross plan with canted inner angles, low extruded corners and narthex to north. Top entablature and balustrade with open pediments to centres of cross arms; quoin strips. Venetian windows with Ionic colonnettes and festoons above, in round-arched recess. Canted inner angles have round windows in square architrave. East cross arm facing street has bowed apse with Corinthian pilastrade and 3 round-headed windows with festoons to aprons, eared architraves and triple keys. Shallow dome on octagonal drum has lantern with round-headed lights, pilasters, cornice and cupola with cross. Narthex has 3 round-headed entrances with Ionic angle pilasters, entablsature and balustrade, Ionic columns support segmental pediment with arms in tympanum. Interior has coffered dome with round windows to 4 lunette recesses. Chapel adjoins south-east angle of school (q.v.)
