Details
The following building shall be added: ATHERTON BAG LANE SD 60 SE 2/77 Collier Brook Bolt Works II Bolt works. 1856 with later alterations and additions, some of 1897 and 1899. Set up for the manufacture of nails and bolts for railway wagons. Brick with Welsh and local slate roofs. Varied ranges for a T-shape overall: forge adjoins storeyed storage block (both aligned N/S) with to West a large screw-boring workshop and to East a finishing and polishing shed. The forge is a remarkable survival: walls with cambered-arched openings with grilles, top ventilated by a continuous louvre with some later roof lights to West slope. Internally 6 forges each with a tall tapering brick stack that break through the slopes of the roof. Vehicle delivery access to South under the same roof. Heavy timber king post roof. Simple 2-storey warehouse attached with taking-in doorway (boarded door and wagon pulley) and 3 large windows under cambered arches. Altered doorway to ground. Seven bay 'screwing workshop' under queen post and king strut roof with evidence of former axial drive shaft. Wide queen post roof to polishing workshop. Windows of standard design, 2 lights. The factory (which is still used for its original purpose) is exceptional in that each of the processing units survives; the forge, although altered and patched, is structurally of a higher standard than generally found on small industrial sites of the date and it is rare for them to survive intact with the individual forges in situ. Bolt and nail production was Atherton's principal industry in the C19; Collier Brook Works is the only surviving factory of its type in the region.
