House incorporating hall of medieval manorial complex of very much greater size
of which a wall fragment survives at east end of later extensions. Hall dates
back to C14 but was altered mid C16 and early C19, and extended early and late
C19. Hall is of rubble stone with tiled roof and rebuilt brick chimney shaft.
Divided into 2 storeys C16. To left is a mid C16 doorway to cross passage, with
double chamfered jambs and 4-centred stone arch. C19 board door with arched
panels and studs. Above this is a C16 2-light window with chamfered stone
mullion and surround. Off-set buttress to right of passage in line with
chimney. Other fenestration altered early C19 but some fragments of C16 stone
window surrounds survive. Ground floor has central tripartite sash; upper
storey has 2 3-pane sashes. C19 door to right with flush panels, C20 glazing to
upper part, and wooden architrave frame. Right gable end totally rebuilt early
C20. Rear has C14 doorway with chamfered 2-centred arch to cross passage, and
altered fenestration. Attached to east are 2 C19 brick extensions, that to
front an early C19 2-storey range with canted bay window, and sash to left bay.
Right part of range formerly outbuildings with irregular blocked and altered
openings, and a 3-pane sash to first floor centre. Rear extension is late C19.
Attached to extreme east end of building is a short length of wall, constructed
in 2 separate stone skins, the north skin with a partly rebuilt 2-centred
chamfered stone archway. Wall terminates in a pier with massive corbel stones
and a projecting jamb, chamfered on one side, once part of a large gateway.
INTERIOR: large C16 fireplace with moulded stone jambs and altered wooden
lintel; small fireplace to chamber over cross passage, with wooden lintel on
stone corbels; C16 floor timbers throughout, with heavy chamfered main beams and
fine wide stop-chamfered joists; C16 close-studded partitions to upper storey
and over passage wall in attic; C16 roof with double purlins, wind-braces, tie
beams and high collars.
