SK 27 NW PARISH OF STONEY MIDDLETON THE AVENUE 4/90 (North Side) 28-4-78 Walls, Steps and Fountain to South and West of The Hall, (formerly listed as 'Retaining Wall, three sets of steps and fountain with semi-circular south wall to south and west of Hall') GV II

Walls, steps and fountain. C19. Coursed squared stone with ashlar. Low retaining wall with slab copings linking three sets of steps with C17 style banded balustrades. On pedestals to top and base of each flight of steps sit urns each with gadrooned tops and bases. Similar urns on pedestals interspersed at regular intervals on the walls between the steps. Central steps led down to another wall which curves outwards in semi-circle to centre. Each corner of this wall is supported by large scrolled brackets. To the south side of the wall is a rocky tufa bank with shell fountain which feeds the polygonal pond below. The eastern flight of steps leadup to the front door of the Hall and the western flight lead to the north lawn.
