Details
NONINGTON ST.ALBANS COURT TR 25 SE 3/164 Swedish Dance Theatre to N.W. of St.Albans 11.6.86 Court GV II Gymnasium. 1938. Joyce Adburgham for the English Gymnastic Society. Timber building of white deal with internal wall boardlining; external facing of Western Red Cedar weather boarding, ship lap and logsiding on diagonal sheathing of Swedish red pine. Internally, Lamella roof of British Columbia pine, exposed against a field of tongued and grooved roofboards, originally painted blue. Externally 7 bay N.W. and S.E. side elevations with four light window strips with small panes set in the 5 inner bays; triangular buttresses faced with diagonal boarding and below a deep cornice comprising 7 bands of horizontal boarding; timber projection along N.W. elvation. Flat roofed single storey horizontally boarded kitchen and changing room wing at N.E. end with flat roofed vertically boarded gallery wing set back above. Wide shaped end gable of horizontal boarding .S.W gable with canted bay with 8 narrow window strips rising to eaves level and with horizontally boarded cornice strip above. Interior; S.W. canted bay originally furnished with movable stage. N.E. spectator gallery with recent stage below. Changing rooms retain ceiling panels faced with lozenge shaped boarding.
